A requirement of home schooling families in our state is to provide fire safety instruction each school year. We typically cover that requirement by attending day-long classes offered by a local camp. The event is always well attended by many families that start their school year by participating, and getting reacquainted with other home school families in our area.
This year one of the classes offered some instruction on how to get out of a house should there be a fire. The speaker was very thorough and even suggested that the kids have a practice drill and climb out their windows using a safety ladder. I didn't hear him mention making sure parents were involved in the practice. As I sat at the back of the class listening to the speaker, I chuckled to a friend and commented, “He probably should be careful about what he’s saying…doesn’t he realize some kid is probably going to try that…on his own.” I should have noticed the twinkle in Aaron’s eye when we later discussed what he had learned that day.
About a week later, as I walked out of my room, Aaron came running…full of excitement…“Mom! I just scaled the roof!”
Not quite sure what he was talking about, I asked, “What, honey?”
Again he repeated, “I just scaled the roof!”
“What…do…you…mean…you…just…scaled…the…roof……….honey?”
“I mean I just threw the ladder out the window and climbed down the side of the house…all by myself! Remember what the guy said? Remember how I always wanted to be Spiderman?”
Many thanks to Aaron’s dear guardian angel. I am forever grateful for all the work you do.
Oh dear. The opportunities for dangerous, exciting things are endless! And boys will try whatever they can think of! Sheesh.

LOL! He sounds like my Dad who made feather wings as a boy. Grandma caught him perched in the window of his 2nd story bedroom ready to jump - she encouraged him to fly UP to the window instead.
